PRUNUS VICTORIA

Perhaps the best known plum, this is a dual-purpose variety widely grown for dessert and also for bottling and jam-making. Trees are self-fertile and crop very heavily, their branches sometimes needing support to prevent breakage under the weight of fruit, which is large, red speckled, and very sweet, rather than strongly flavoured. It makes a medium-sized tree, unless grafted on a semi-dwarfing rootstock such as 'Pixy' to produce fans on garden walls or dwarf pyramids.
